Naya Reynolds: 22-Year-Old Mother Shot And Killed On Kalamazoo Interstate

Sunday, 04 September 2022 19:50

Naya Reynolds, 22, of Kalamazoo, was fatally shot on Friday, August 26, 2022, while in a vehicle on the Interstate 94 ramp.

Naya Reynolds was a diligent student at Western Michigan University, majoring in criminal justice and sociology. The 22-year-old was also a cheerleading enthusiast who touched the lives of those who knew her.

“She wanted the best for everybody. She loved her family. She loved her nephews. She wanted to do something with her life,â€ Maya Davis, Naya's mother, told TV station Fox 17.

Davis said what made her daughter even more special was her huge heart.

“We would be driving and she would see a homeless person and say ‘Mom! Stop the car.’ And she would go in her purse and get money and that’s what I want people to know about her. I don’t want people to remember what happened to her. I want them to remember the lives that she impacted, Davis was quoted as saying.

Reynolds, of Kalamazoo, was fatally shot on Friday, August 26, 2022, while in a vehicle on the Interstate 94 ramp. â€œIt makes no sense,â€ her mother told Fox 17. “She was just on her way home, that’s it. We were together that day. We were all at my daughter's house.â€

Her high school cheer coach, who she maintained a close relationship with, said that Reynolds was a very special person to all she met.

“She just was just a ball of energy that just loved people and she was always rooting for someone else, Deveta Gardner, her cheerleading coach and mentor, told MLive.com. “She had a smile that can light up a room.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene on outstanding warrants as he tried to leave, according to Portage Public Safety Director Nicholas Armold.

Another woman, who was pregnant, was also shot during the incident. She was last reported to be in stable condition at a nearby hospital. An 18-month-old baby was also shot and is expected to recover, according to law enforcement.Reynolds loved cheerleading, thanks to her older sister, who was a cheerleader as well. Reynolds made the cheerleading squad at Kalamazoo Central High School, according to Gardner.

Reynolds was also a spiritual person who sought to strengthen her relationship with God.

“I remember when she told me that she wanted to get baptized, and that was one of the proudest days of her life, Gardner was quoted as saying. “For a young person to be in that space is so powerful.

WMU’s president expressed his grief over Reynolds’ slaying in a letter to faculty and students.

“We extend our condolences to the families and all those close to Naya … who are especially experiencing the pain of these tragic losses, WMU President Edward Montgomery said in a written statement to the university community. “Processing through grief takes time. As a community, let us lean on each other for needed support now and in the weeks and months ahead.

Reynolds’ funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Kalamazoo.

“We have people who were actually involved in the incident, who are avoiding us,â€ Nick Armold, the director for the Portage Department of Public Safety said.

Despite the lack of cooperation, Armold said he is determined the solve the case.

“The I-94 case, we’re going to keep working that until we we solve it; we make an arrest, Armold was quoted as saying. “Because somebody is out in our communities, who apparently has the ability to shoot and kill women and children. That’s just totally unacceptable.

Police have launched an investigation and hope those who may have saw the incident can help them. Anyone with information is asked to anonymously call Silent Observer at 269-343-2100 or go online at www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.

Brenda Clark was 38 years old in Knox County, Tennessee in 1996. Her remains were recently identified from DNA samples collected from her and family members.

Now, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has launched an investigation to learn how Clark was murdered, and more importantly, who killed her.

The slaying has been an unsolved case for decades, but investigators have finally been able to identity the victim, whose remains were found in the woods by hunters in 1996.

For decades, forensics experts were unable to identify the remains, which led investigators to officially label her as a Jane Done. But in 2018, her DNA was entered into a DNA database and a match was made.

According to the Knoxville Sentinel, “In 2019, TBI agents were notified of a possible match with a woman living in Knoxville, the release stated. After contacting with the woman, agents learned she had a missing twin sister.

The TBI is now in need of the public’s help: If anyone knows anything about this slaying, please call 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Ashley Lockhart: 34-Year-Old Mother Of 6 Stabbed To Death In Philadelphia

Ashley Lockhart, 34, was found stabbed to death inside a gold van, a Honda Odyssey, in West Philadelphia about 8:23 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2022.

Ashley Lockhart, 34, was by all accounts an amazing mother who was devoted to her six children, the youngest of which being only 5 months old. The young Philadelphia mother was focused on raising her “Six Charms,â€ as she called them , but she had also filed a restraining order against her fiance.

Lockhart was found stabbed to death inside a gold van, a Honda Odyssey, in West Philadelphia about 8:23 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2022. When Philadelphia police arrived at the scene, they discovered Lockhart in the front passenger seat. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to her arms, neck and body, including one to her face, according to media reports.

Less than an hour after the brutal attack, 34-year-old Raymond Thompson, turned himself in to police. He was promptly arrested and has been charged with murder.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner labeled the slaying as "extremely sad and very, very troubling."Senior Pastor William Brownlee, Lockhart’s cousin, told a local TV station that she was "loved by everyone."

Brownlee said that even though Lockhart had a restraining order against Raymond, she was smitten."She was in unconditional love," he was quoted as saying. "She fought for him, and she was the one who loved the children… When love is not reciprocated, that's when it becomes dangerous."

Brownlee told the media outlet that no matter what, the children need to all stay together to fight the “curse of division.

"I understand we are all mad at Raymond, but he's still the father, the living parent that these kids have to grow up and one day face," Brownlee was quoted as saying. "There's something called a generational retaliation," he said. "If we retaliate, then the children are going to start to retaliate. We have to stop it at the root."

A GoFundMe account set up on behalf of the children says:

“On Saturday August 6, 2022 our beautiful Ashley Lockhart was taken so tragic and sudden from her 6 beautiful daughters, family and loved ones. Ashley was an amazing Mother, dedicated working Mother and devoted Mother. She loved all of her children and devoted her time, energy and made sacrifices for them that they will forever remember. As this is extremely difficult to process, and unimaginable to even begin to try and move forward, we the family would like to maintain the momentum for the girls. They are returning to school in a few short weeks, and their every day essentials are important for us to make sure they aren’t lacking, as Ashley did. The ages of all of the girls are 10, 8, 6, 5, 4 and 5 months. As a family we will make sure that all “6 Charms (as Ashley called her girls) stay together and that their Mothers life and legacy is one that they will forever remember. All proceeds will go towards costs and needs for the girls only.
